No wonder my plants no grow too good. It’s not me. it’s the worn-out soil in Kapahulu! Now I have better good excuse for killing all those plants from before. Ka-Pahulu is cursed with bad soil. Ka means “da”, Pahulu means “worn-out soil” -due to over farming, may be. The Hawaiian must have moved on from the area to grow stuff in Waikiki instead; or may be just go give warning to the kekei farmers by naming the place “worn soil”. So, next time I go City Mill for some top soil before I go give the garden another try. Good luck planting in Kapahulu. Oh, the coral boulders (huge kine) are another reason my plants died. Talk story later, okay.

Check out this old world business concept repackaged for the new world called Natural Capitalism. You too can run your business with this concept application. You can see fragments of the concept in our business world and it is a matter of time when it will be integrated common business practice.

Replicable, biological models with closed loops and zero waste, shifting from goods to service. These are the next steps in sustainable thinking and doing.
• Replicable – franchise like Starbucks, L&L Drive-Inn, Dave’s ice cream, Pizza Hut, Jack in the Box, Jumba Juice, where the business model can be repeated again and again.
• Biological Models with close loops and zero waste – Macadamia nut processing plant uses the shells to burn energy to run the light and machine. Starbucks use their coffee grind to generate energy to run the store. Highway that uses car vibration to power the street lamp. Cell phone that charges when you talk into it. (Hello, sound wave harvesting)
• Shifting from goods to service. Hawaii is famous for selling leisure service rather than goods. The goods are to support the service rather than the product itself. Sell floral service rather than flowers from Sweet Blossoms. Sell phone service plan rather than the phone from Mobi. Sell dining experience rather than a box lunch. Sell housing service package rather than simply the house. Sell a comprehensive transportation package (bus, taxi, carpool, rail) rather simply a car. Sell entertainment package rather than simply a TV.

Yes, KCC Saturday Market is little too early and sometimes too crowded for a lazy start of the weekend morning. But farmer’s markets are spouting in different neighborhoods for your convenient. A list of farmer’s market can be found in the Edible Hawaiian magazine. The new Blaisdale’s Wednesday Market did not make the list yet.
