1845 (The Great Mehele) – King Lunalilo own 3,200 acres of densely vegetated land stretch from from Waikiki to Maunalani Heights.
1877 – King Kalakaua leased the land to the Kapiolani Park Association which developed it with house lots and a horse-racing track, planted trees, built walks and roads.
1886 – There is no Kapahulu Avenue. It was still Kuekaunahi stream.
1889 – Charles Snodgrass Martin, a businessman built one of the first private residences near Campbell Avenue and Hinano Street. He sank a well, built a windmill, had cattle roam around Diamond Head and even sold pigs to Prince Kuhio on occasions.
1890s – Various Kapiolani park managers controversial deals with the the transfer of oceanfront lots to business leaders.
1893 – 90% of land in Hawaii falls on the hand of the foreigners.
1904 Waikiki Aquarium in its making
1913 Kapiolani Park became part of the City and County of Honolulu park system.
1920s – Properties were subdivided and resulted in the characteristic that we have today. The sections bordered by Lincoln, Kaimuki avenues, H-1 Freeway and Kapahulu Avenue has many homes dating back from that era. Land can be bought for as low as 25 cents a square foot. ($1,250 for a 5,000 sf lot, today $580,000 for that same lot)
1927 Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium to honor the Great War heroes.
1943 Love’s Bakery operated its unit at 836 Kapahulu Avenue until 1990. Love’s Bakery was founded 1851. | history |
1948 Foodland opened Hawaii’s first supermaket at Market City on May 6. Dream of Maurice “Sully” Sullivan and “Mama” Lau who worked together at Lanikai Store prior.
1951 Completion of the Kapahulu Groin by James W. Glover
1957 Leonard’s Bakery moved into the current 333 Kapahulu Avenue location. It was founded in 1952
1957 Hale Niu Tuxedo founded by the Kato family. It closed in 2007. | news |
1961 Rainbow Drive Inn founded by Seiju Ifuku opened its business on Kapahulu on October 2.
1970 Ono Hawaiian Food Restaurant
1981 KC Drive-In relocated to Kapahulu from its Waikiki location (since 1934). It closed in 2004. | news |
2007 Safeway Center opened.
