Creating work benefit outside the box

Pay-day-loan service for employee. They are going to use the outside pay-day-loan service anyway. Why not let the money stay in-house. And out of good will the company can use them to sponsor personal finance workshop for those who lack the knowledge.

Pay-leave-loan for employee who don’t have enough vacation days. Why not give them incentive to take vacation before they earn it. The company saves on benefit payout and the employee get to take vacation before they earn it. It’s a win-win situation.

Day care service. Employee pay a great amount on child care. Why not pool that money together and has it in house? It sure saves employee time on commuting and peace of mind.

Fitness service. Employee pay a great amount to outside fitness center premium. Why not lease a few popular machines, organize running group, hire a fitness coach, install shower facility and get the employee healthy. Another win-win arrangement.

Purchase or lease a company vehicle on the outer Islands. This is a simple calculation. Do a simple study for three months and you will see if it is feasible to do this. It’s not just add up all the car rental bill over the three months period. That’s the first step. Have all the administrators log down their time making arrangement for car rental. Have all the partners and employee log down their time waiting in line or waiting at the car rental. Multiply those hours by their respective hourly rate and add to the basic car rental. That would be your total cost of doing a car rental arrangement. Now if the cost is higher than a car (purchased and leased) plus operation cost such as gas, insurance, parking fee and basic maintenance. If that make sense, it’s time to make the switch. If flying is getting excessive for the employee to the outer island, a helicopter purchase may be considered.

Three shifts. There is 24 hours in a day and why let tradition work hour minimize the effective use of your office equipments. Office equipment are let idle during the off hours, 16 hours of it. 60% non effective. The solution. Why not have three shifts? One with the normal 8-5 and the other 5-2 and 2-8. Now instead of having an office of 80 computers, you can do it with 27. let say 1500 per computer, that’s $81,000 of cost saving on computer upgrade per 1.5 years. The off shifts also alleviate commute traffic. More shift choice for the employees. Better moral. Happier employee.
