One day, I was at the construction job site. I noticed there was a fire. Immediately I wanted to yell, “fire, fire, everyone get out of here,” and dial 911. But I remembered that under the architect/engineer contract (AIA document 312), I am just an observer at the job site and have no authorization to stop work. I think deeply, “Am I authorized to call 911? Will I cause a commotion if the fire department arrived later and cause a temporary delay to the construction schedule?; is it really a fire or someone barbecuing?” I call the site superintendent ask him, “do you see anything in that direction.” pointing toward the direction of the fire. He yelled, “fire, fire, everyone get out of here, someone dial 911”. I am happy that he is responsible for stopping work. What a relieve! I note this on my visit log.
